Great way to kill an hour and a half with my 4 year old,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Make Your Own Chewing Gum Kit (6.5 oz.) (Toy)
Bought this as something to do with my daughter other than playing games and watching TV. She's recently picked up a chewing gum addiction so I figured she'd love this.
Of course when I got it out of the box she was bouncing with excitement.
Some initial comments on it. First DON'T use it in the microwave. Just take the time to do it on the stove, it only took about 10 minutes to heat the chicle to the point where it was workable. Microwaving you run the risk of the tray melting which would leave a horrible mess everywhere. The chicle is extremely sticky until you incorporate the corn syrup. If you get any in the pan the water keeps it from sticking. It's just easier, and the tray wont melt.
Ok, now to the actual review. The little story contained in the kit was interesting, my daughter really learned something from it and can recite the origins of the chicle and the trees it comes from, and as a bonus I got to teach her about the phases of matter from boiling the water as well as melting the chicle.
It is hot so you'll need to do some of the work at first, but once you incorporate the corn syrup and start incorporating the sugar and flavoring its cool enough. She loved getting messy and having some fun rolling and squishing the mixture and putting the flavors in. It was completely doable for a 4 year old. (She just turned 4).
The finished product turned out pretty darn good too. It's sweet enough, the flavors are decent, and the texture is perfect. She absolutely loves chewing it and it made about 30 decent size pieces of gum. I enjoy it too, even though the flavor doesn't last that long it remains sweet and holds it's texture for the hours that I chewed it.
I'd definitely buy it again and she's asking already when we can make some more. That earns 5 stars in my book.
