2.0 out of 5 stars Fire Hazard, June 6, 2009
This review is from: Celestron 44104 500x Power Advanced Biological Microscope (Electronics)
Well I was hoping the review about Fire Hazard was wrong when I ordered this as I read all the reviews that were on at that time. However my experience was that the slides arrived damaged and the electric illuminator had the burning smell and was defintely overheating. This is the only item that I've ever actually returned to Amazon in the history of all items I've ever ordered from Amazon. Without the damaged slides and the overheating problem I think it would be a wonderful item however. Damaged Slides are easy to replace however the overheating issue is a very serious issue as it could catch on fire and cause your house to burn down or wherever you are using it. I hope to one day be able to afford one of the $500 - or above Microscopes as I'm still very interested in a microscope. But in the meantime I will choose to live without as this microscopes overheating problem is too dangerous.

Dear Jaroslaw and others, I decided to read all the new reviews on this item. From reading the reviews it seems Celestron might have taken action and fixed the problem on overheating. Amazon contacted me when I wrote the review to describe everything that was happening per the product being defective and I told them. When I purchased this microscope back in the day there was no LED illuminator. It was a large glass bulb of some sort that most defintely was overheating. You would not be able to touch the bulb even after half an hour and still have it cold to the touch. It would burn you. I like the others have listed liked everything about the microscope except for the overheating issue. I haven't ordered another one since I received this years ago and so I have no experience with the LED instead of the Bulb.
Sincerely,
Jon Beckmon

The microscope that I received today has an LED illuminator. No heating problem at all.

Where did you order your unit? Amazon is misrepresenting this item in their description. It is described as having the LED illuminator but comes with the tungsten bulb illuminator instead which is a pre 2009 version. The newer models do have the much improved LED but that is not what is being shipped by Amazon. I am returning mine for a full refund. There is another online source that has the updated LED version, AND at a lower price.

Thanks for posting! Yeah I thought they were but I just received mine and it has tungsten!
Can you tell me where you found the LED version at?
