5.0 out of 5 stars A Seminal Work--A must read, June 26, 2013
This review is from: Disinformation: Former Spy Chief Reveals Secret Strategies for Undermining Freedom, Attacking Religion, and Promoting Terrorism (Kindle Edition)
This is a must read. From the first words of the book, I was hooked.

The use of Disinformation, the deliberate manipulative tactic to create, out of whole cloth, a great lie with the deliberate intention of destroying reputations of men, peoples, races, faith groups, and institutions, is well, staggering. We may not want to accept it-we may believe it can't really happen. If you doubt, read the book and post a review.

Let me give you an example from the book. Do you remember during the Clinton administration, there was an alarming report announced. Black churches were being burned at an historic rate. The KKK-like overtones to this story were humiliating and alarming to Americans. People all over the world heard of our shame-the evil of violent racism--plaguing American and the South. Legislation was passed at the Federal level! Bill Clinton came out reminiscing of the church burnings he remembered from his childhood. During that time, I remember me unease with the way the story was being accepted, seemingly without scrutiny by the press--almost gleefully. Well, sometime later, hardly reported (unlike the charges), an independent study proved every single charge had been false! In Disinformation, we learn that Soviet agents were responsible for this slander and libel against the American people. But the damage was done--and that is why Disinformation is implemented--it works! And let's just say it, it happened in AMERICA! It is much easier to believe this going on during the Cold War in in some unfortunate country like Romania, but not America! And this was during the 1990s!

There are so many more illustrations, equally or more egregious. The disinformation campaigns against Jews and the Christian church are, nothing less than heartrending. One thing I can say about the designers and implementers of disinformation--they're really, really good at what they do.

Pacepa's work is an eyeopener, and I believe a seminal work, documenting for history the malevolence and effectiveness of unrestrained power in centralized governments. This is truly Animal Farm, 1984 and Brave New World lived large in the real world of flesh and blood humanity--wreaking unquantifiable harm on real people who live and breathe under the power of government unchecked. The power of Soviet disinformation is the power to destroy lives, hearts and minds.

If you want to see into the birth of modern terrorism-you'll find it hear. Would we be living in this same world today if it were not for the diabolical campaign of sending 4000 agents into the Middle East with the Great libel against the Jews in the form of the legendary writings called, "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" a book about the secret Jewish plan to take over the world--this is still sold today in Muslim countries next to Mein Kampf. Yes, disinformation has changed the course of history. Look at what high schools and colleges teach today as history--this should be required by all students studying Modern History.

BTW, disinformation is not to be confused with misinformation as the book explains.

I'm not surprised. I read a recent article in The New American showing how the FSB (formerly the KGB) commits many acts of terror, then blames Chechnya. And that's just within the past few years.

I am highly reticent in believing anything Mr. Pacepa is writing, since he has aquired his high position in Romania during the Soviet occupation of the country, while Stalin was the real "owner" of the Eastern Europe. He was a "Securitate" general during the worse era of the Communism, when hundreds of thousand of people have been sent to prisons and to the Canal for nothing (a local way of killing the dissidents), without any due trial. He was by no means an "inocent".

Anyway, like almost all the former Communists who became "dissidents" in the Eastern Europe, Pacepa has embraced the right wing agenda and is pandering to Fox News Channel, sort of an annex to the Bill O'Reilly, Hannity and of the Christian Right Aggenda. All his previous actions were performed not by caring too much about the interest of the people, but only by taking care about his own interests. Rightfully some critics of his previous writings were appaled not only by the corruption of the Communist governments, as described by him, but also by his corrupt mentality!

I doubt the fact that he might have changed since he has published his previous books!

On the other hand this book might be interesting in a different way. One can see that no matter what the starting point for the mentalities of the former "high rank communists" in a country without any communist tradition like Romania was, or the starting point of formerly persecuted Catholics in Poland, their mentalities have converged: nowadays exactly the same anti-democratic convictions can be identified to all these political actors, no matter their origin and background: anti-European, highly homophobic and adepts of a special brand of "democracy" that is in fact the old archaic patriarchal world order. No place for evolution!

You can hear Pacepa and think that you are hearing the old-fashioned Polish presidents!

In the long run, Communism has "refrigerated" the history in this part of the world. The delay in the evolution of the new ideas is now much greater than it was before the beginnings of Communism, both for the ruling elite and for the popular masses.

Not surprising. Bill Clinton wasn't called "Slick Willy" for nothing. He behaved and made up events with the arrogant self-assurance that nobody would discover the scams. Did you ever notice the way he carried a Bible with him when he attended church in Washinton, DC. The problem was that it was a left-wing "social justice" type church presided over by a far-left zealot. If there were any Bible readings, they were no doubt printed in the bulletin, as they are in practically every mainline chuch. Billy's Bible was clearly just for the cameras. Hillary had the same penchant for invention, such as announcing that she was named after the famous English mountain climber Sir Edmund Hillary, who scaled Mountain Everest in 1951. The problem was that Hillary was born in 1947.

I simply mentioned the fact that Mr. Pacepa was self-serving when he wrote this book. All he wants is money.

After being a Stalinist during the Stalin era, he became a pro-religion person.

That has absolutely nothing to do with the USA.

In fact the East-European countries are not following at all the US example concerning democracy. In the US, religions are not allowed to intervene in public schools. In Romania, yes, it is legal for them to intervene with religious propaganda. Evolution has been purged from being discussed in schools and only the religious "truth" is allowed.

Yes it was a jump from a brand of totalitarian state to another brand. (the "moaste" people of the right wing stupidity).

"Soviet agents" during Clinton's administration, when the Soviet Union had ceased to exist? Disinformation within disinformation?

I doubt that all the Soviet Agents just disappeared because the Soviet Union did. I suspect you will find many still working for Putin to this day.

fCh says:

This book shows that evil takes many a form, even in our secular age. Mixing generalities about the craft of dis/information with few facts and plenty of fiction, Disinformation: The Secret Strategy to Destroy the West is, upon some fact checking, a class-act of disinformation, regarding the role of the Romanian secret service since 1963, and respectively libelous, regarding its final chapter when the character of Larry Watts, a long term American scholar and public servant, is attacked.

A few Google searches will help you clear away the fog of Disinformation behind which stand Messrs. Pacepa & Rychlak. Following is the summary of my fact checking:

1) For the most years of the Cold War, Socialist Romania had been one of the best friends, if not the best, the US/West had had among the Soviet Bloc countries;
2) The KGB and other Soviet Bloc secret services considered and treated Romania as a threat on the same level as the US, even though she was formally a socialist sister country;
3) Pacepa admitted publicly that for the most time he had been employed by the Romanian secret service, he was receiving orders from the top echelon in KGB;
4) Pacepa climbed through the ranks of the Romanian Securitate at a time when the personnel at his level was torturing prisoners of conscience (religious, political, etc.);
5) After his 'defection' to the West, (first in West Germany, then the US), Pacepa was received with suspicion by the West Germans and the US intelligence communities;
6) In mid-eighties, halfway into Ceausescu's paranoia years, Pacepa was re-purposed by the hawkish wing in the 2nd Reagan Administration, moment in which he has started a long record of disinformation;
7) After the fall of the Iron Curtain, Romania started again on the path of becoming a reliable partner of the West (NATO, the US, and the European Union) in a part of the world fraught with uncertainties. In this long and arduous process, culminating with Romanian's acceptance in NATO (2002) and the European Union (2007), Mr. Larry Watts has assisted several Romanian administrations, on behalf of IREX, with the alignment process regarding ethnic minorities, intelligence services and military conversion.
8) After 1989, the liberal democrat Romania has sided with the US in all its international initiatives, and Romanian brave soldiers still serve along with our uniformed men and women in Afghanistan.

We have entered a time when telling friends from foes becomes imperative. An empowered Russia is getting increasingly assertive in the post-Soviet space, and its leverage is not restricted only to oil and gas. I leave it to the readers to connect the dots while recalling a sound guiding principle, CUI PRODEST?

Tarnishing the reputation of a long term and reliable ally, and of a fellow American should come as no surprise from Pacepa, once a mercenary of evil who's never recanted for his activity as employee of a Stalinist state repressive apparatus (read, torturer).

However, I wonder what role professor Rychlak has been playing in this Disinformation, for an academic ought to have tried to contact his fellow academic Larry Watts, lest the whole thing becomes what it really is in its final chapter, a libelous attack.

When I read Umberto Eco's The Prague Cemetery, I had thought that its main character, Simone Simonini has been relegated to some fictional past, for in this day and age of quasi-instantaneous fact-checking, our world cannot for long accommodate Simonini-like characters. Yet, Pacepa is nothing less than today's Simonini, a mercenary who's alive and kicking in some DC leafy suburb, on the dime of the US Gov't and unsuspecting readership. Readers beware!
