Excellent Pic Quality - Charging an Issue,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nikon COOLPIX P340 12.2 MP Wi-Fi CMOS Digital Camera with 5x Zoom NIKKOR Lens and Full HD 1080p Video (Black) (Electronics)
I have been using Nikon equipment since 1972 and, until this camera, have been very happy with their products.
-Takes excellent very sharp high quality pictures.
-Dim natural light performance is excellent.
The Not So Good:
-Strobe is too weak for anything but very near field pics but not unexpected for a package this small.
-Very small size a double edged sword. Hard to hold comfortably but certainly very convenient. I also have a D90 & D3200 so convenience, at least for me, is the reason d'etre for buying it.
-Has a USB interface for charging & downloading but must use the included Nikon wall cube to charge it. It will not charge from a generic USB power supply including those rated twice what the Nikon adapter is rated at. Worse, it will not charge from a relatively large USB backup battery or the USB power outlets in my car. All these devices successfully charge all my other USB devices, including our two power hungry Kindle Fires, so there is no excuse for not charging the P340. This means unless there is a 120VAC outlet available the P340 does not get charged. It also means I have to carry more charging hardware when I travel instead of the generic devices that previously handled everything. Because of this reason alone I am sorry I bought the P340.
Yesterday I tried charging the P340 in my car from a different USB adapter (one that plugs into a cigarette lighter outlet). This time it did indeed charge. Not sure why it did not work with one (no particular brand name) and does work with another (ridicuously expensive adapter with the BMW logo on it). This is good because I know I can recharge the P340 when no 120VAC outlet is present but I am still not changing the overall rating because there is no good reason a USB interface should not be universal and work with any USB adapter, especially a USB backup battery. Even if a generic USB adapter is rated less than the Nikon adapter the only consequence should be a long battery charge duration. That is the way it works with virtually every one of the many other USB based devices we have including our Kindle Fires that require a robust charging source.
Had oppurtunity to us ethe P340 extensively. Took 184 pictures over the course of about 6 hours, about 10% using the strobe, before I noticed the battery icon indicating a low battery. I was satified with this performance.

W. Cornett says:
I have a P300 that will charge when connected to my PC or to any USB wall adapter. The end that connects to the camera is not a standard mini usb or micro usb plug found on most devices. The proprietary cord is a pain to keep separate from other usb cords and can only be used with my P300. Why Nikon didn't use a standard connector is beyond me because their digital SLRs use a standard mini usb connector like Canon does. I agree that since the P340 still uses the proprietary cord, that's a good reason not to buy the camera. In every other respect it's a step up from the P300 or P310.
