Power rating is grossly inaccurate
, January 5, 2009
I am a laser engineer with access to calibrated power meters (+/-5%). I just purchased this pointer and with fresh batteries (not the ones included) it only measured 18mW on the bench.
Therefore, even with measurement tolerances, this laser didn't even make it to half of its advertised specification. The product description and title are grossly misleading and false.
I have contacted various sellers of these products, and they all will admit that the power rating is based on a single unit that (probably just barely) met specifications. The units they ship are not tested for power.
The reason this pointer gets 2 stars is that it (1) is nice to hold, and (2) comes in an attractive case with batteries.
Take note, these pointers are definitely not toys. Even at 18mW you are presenting yourself (and those around you) with a serious eye hazard. Reflections off of shiny objects present the biggest random risk. Blindness and laser burns in retina are permanent.
