This review is from: Brother DS700D Compact Duplex Scanner - Retail Packaging (Personal Computers)
I am over-all quite happy with this product. It scans fast and is very quiet. The software is strait-forward and very easy to use. When I first thought of buying a duplex scanner, I worried that the "see through" effect I often got from scanning thin pages on my flatbed scanner would be twice as bad, if the image is being scanned from both sides at once, but that isn't the case at all, in fact there isn't any problem with seeing the backside of the page on the scan of the front at all.
Some things I don't like about it, however:
1. I had to re-calibrate it several times when I first started using it. First there was a line appearing right down the middle of everything I scanned. When I re-calibrated it again, the line was gone but the scans had a choppy texture. On the third re-calibration, the line came back. But after the 4th re-calibration it's been working fine.
2. The paper you are scanning has to be absolutely flat. If there is an uneven edge (pages torn from a spiral-bound notebook, glue reside on pages taken from a debound book, tears or folds, etc) it will catch while going through the scanner and the page will come out warped on the scan.
3. Whenever I scan color pages, no matter how perfectly flat they are, the scan comes out curved. The page is a perfect rectangle, but the scan is not, the horizontal sides are curved. This is really frustrating and I can't figure out why it's happening!
All-in-all, I'm very happy with the scanner and it serves its purpose as a mobile unit, but the fussiness makes it necessary for me to have a flatbed scanner as a backup.
