Mac is the best,
I've had my ibook (an older model) for almost 4 years. It's portable, reliable, fast, and beautiful.
When I got it I was in a discussion group with seven people. By the end of the year 4 of the other 6 people got ibooks. One got a powerbook, and the 7th person has basically dropped out of the program (theology phd). Mere coincidence? Well, yes, probably.
These Mac people are ingenious. For example, the power adapter is small with little flaps that open to allow one to wind the cable. This contributes to the computer being portable. The computer itself is very small and light. My girlfriend has a Dell that is 2 years younger, cost $250 more (350 counting the education discount) and is much heavier and slower. But I'm sure other models of Dell would do better.
It almost never crashes, and has never gotten a virus. My university often sends emails about viruses going around, and in the past 5.5 years, not one pertained to Macs. The screen has broken three times, but I would call Apple who got a box to me that day to ship it to them, and the repaired ibook back to me on the morning of the second day. They deserve their reputation for best customer service. I did buy the extended warrantee though, and recommend it.
On durability: a friend dropped his from 5 feet onto a concrete floor and had no problems. I once accidentally and stupidly dragged mine, in a patagonia messenger's bag, from the back of my motorcycle for about a mile. The bag and computer were fine.
The beauty may seem a small thing, but it's such a pleasure to use that it helps when I'm not looking forward to working on a paper.
It's been great for the past 4 years, but I'm looking forward to buying a new intel one in a year or so.
