This review is from: Renewal: Remaking America's Schools for the Twenty-First Century (Paperback)
As a parent I find "RENEWAL" to be a handbook on how the educational system should work versus how it does work. "Renewal" is well written and well organized and thus makes it easy to follow the myriad ins and outs of the educational system.
Mr. Kwalwasser starts with a quick overview of the management and politics of school reform. He proceeds to cover the roles of boards of education, superintendents, principals, teachers and parents in manageable length chapters. His ideas are culled from high performing school districts and his and many years involved in educational policy, but mostly from common sense. There's nothing radical here, just the idea that systematic change, communication among all the participants and good old hard work are what is needed.
As a concerned parent, this book is a wonderful window into school reform. I can't recommend it highly enough.
