As sappy as some people think of this film, it has resonated with me for many years. I first saw it in TCM as "The Easy Way", which explains why I couldn't find it. (I taped it). I also disagree with other reviewers who thought Betsy Drake wasn't believable. This is very much of an ensemble piece, and the great director Norman Taurog kept things coherent and interesting.
Best are the little kids, very natural, with requisite wisecracks and true affection.
Films about the human condition are often hard to interpret by many, and are often misunderstood. The welfare and foster family situation has been horribly bastardized over the years, and it's encouraging to see a family about whom it really matters. Similar to "The Human Comedy", heart-strings are tugged, and life goes on...not maybe as it is, but as it ought to be.
It's a good film, with solid production values. The DVD has some slight sound problems, and the picture quality is good as a forgotten B-movie can be, not that bad. The over-all result is a film of pathos, sweetness and encouragement, that can only paint a lovely picture of good people making the best of extenuating circumstances.
I liked it a lot. Always will.
