Author Julie James has pulled off something that few chick-lit authors do quite so well: she has created a romance of equals and made it delightful, funny, poignant and sexy.
Her hero, J.D. and her heroine, Payton, are long-time associates in a huge law firm in Chicago. Both are tough, ambitious and intelligent. But both are also quirky, humorous and immensely human. And both are up for the same partnership which both have worked their tails off for. James has written a battle of the sexes novel with themes as old as Shakespeare's, but with a twenty-first century equality which evokes the best of Tracy and Hepburn's amazing chemistry, and then some.
I loved these two characters so much that I was actually a little nervous as I began reading the last few chapters. I was worried about how this story could have a happy ending without compromising the integrity of the characters. But the ending is perfect. Just wonderful. James even manages to work a little Jane Austen mystique into the mix without making it sappy.
I adored this book. Highly recommended.
