I adored this book!,
This review is from: Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles) (Mass Market Paperback)
Hounded by Kevin Hearne was an absolute delight to read. I cannot express how awesome this book is. I bought it sort of on a whim, not having had such hot luck with new urban fantasy authors of late, but man am I glad I picked this little baby up!
Atticus is a fantastic hero, he is strong and gifted, but not all-powerful or self agrandizing. I loved Atticus's witty banter and jokes with all the goddesses that came to visit him and his guarded but relaxed way of approaching life. I never realised druidic magic could be so rad. Some people compare Kevin Hearne to Jim Butcher, but Atticus is a million times cooler and more interesting than Harry Dresden. I loathed the limp-wristed perpetual-screw-up with no hope and no prospects side of Harry Dresden's character. He was just so ineffectual. Atticus, praise the Gods above and below, is nothing like that.
Normally I get leery of fantasy books too loaded up with fantastical creatures from many different pantheons and intersecting deities and the such, but Hounded never felt weighed down by mythology. The plot absolutely hums along with no lull or boring passages. So so so much happened and yet the story never felt rushed, there were no gaping plot holes and for such a seriously fantastical novel, I never had trouble with suspension of disbelief once! I hate it when authors insert unexplained mythology or magic and leave the reader to fumble along, desperately trying to tie together the plot as they go. Kevin Hearne is a true maestro at urban fantasy. I cannot wait for tomorrow when I get to buy the sequel!
