Lightweight and Fragile, but Portability and Affordability Have Their Tradeoffs,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: CowboyStudio Doulbe Off-Camera Flash Shoe Mount Swivel Umbrella Kit for Select Nikon/Canon Models (Electronics)
Like all things in photography, to get one thing, you must give up another. In this case, it's strength, sturdiness and overall heft in exchange for a good price and easy portability.
I used this to do some test shots in my front yard today, and as soon as I took the first picture, the wind picked up and blew straight into the umbrella, knocking the stand, umbrella and flash over (which was exactly what I suspected would happen upon setting it up, but darned if I ever heed my own warnings). The spokes inside the umbrella were bent all to heck, and it took quite a bit of wrangling to even somewhat get them straightened back out. Thankfully, the flash landed on grass and soft earth, so, with any luck, it will prove to be fine as I continue to use it (lots can go wrong with them, so it'll take some time to see if everything still works okay).
Now, mind you, this was a very light wind, and had the stand been wider and heavier, it likely wouldn't've fallen over. But, again, its lightness and smaller size make it far easier to carry to locations outside the house, so I can't really complain. Just make sure you anchor it somehow when shooting outdoors. I definitely won't push my luck like that again.
All in all, though, I'm already quite pleased/satisfied with this kit, especially since it was so affordable. I imagine it'll serve me well.
