A Mashup of Hardcore Gaming and New Technology,
This review is from: ZombiU - Nintendo Wii U (Video Game)
With a combination of excellent use of the Wii U pad, a gameplay flow that emphasizes both smart thinking and quick reflexes, and an atmosphere that echos Resident Evil, Day Z, and Silent Hill, ZombiU is, for me, not only the best launch title for the Wii U, but among the best launch titles ever. ZombiU stands out from the crowd of mediocre horror games this year and is a must purchase for fans of the genre and hardcore gamers.
-This game will punish you (provided you are playing on Normal). Death comes swiftly and suddenly; one minute your creeping around corners, the next minute an alarm goes off and zombies swarm your position. A few hits and you'll fall, turning your hero into a zombie and starting your character back to zero. It's similar to Demon/Dark Souls: Death is punished.
-Unlike most of the recent Zombie games, this is no run and gun, it's more just RUN! Ammo is scarce and weapons are difficult to fire until you spend the time both honing your own skills and building up your characters skill. That doesn't mean you'll never shoot, it just means you should make sure it counts every time.
-The atmosphere, sound effects, environments, lighting, all work together to make this game very creepy. You'll find yourself wondering if that shuffling in the next room is just a rat or something much worse, and you'll never know unless you turn on your flashlight and pop the door open.
-The Zombies seem decidedly more intelligent than what you see in something like black ops zombie mode, and their speed is just slow enough so that you can sprint away but fast enough that a wrong turn will mean certain death.
-The Wii U Pad is used to great effect in this game. It's a map, your inventory system, a note taking device, a short range radar, and a scanner. To add to the "realism", using the wii u pad does not pause the game, so don't expect to try to pop open a soda from your backpack mid fight. It's an experience that is hard to describe without playing it, but once you use it, you'll wonder how you ever sat through menus and inventory screens on other consoles. Rather than being a boring part of the game, it really adds to the drama, as you never know if that split second you take your eyes off the tv to look at the map will be the exact moment a zombie comes around the corner.
-Visually, the game is on par with what you'd expect from this generation. Given the huge quality differences seen over the life of the previous consoles, I'd say this bodes well for future Wii U games.
Nintendo said they were going after hardcore gamers this generation, and ZombiU is that hardcore launch title. Between the compelling gameplay and great use of the Wii U's new tech, this is the launch title to get.

Do you know the part in the game when you upgrade the radar? Can you progress on through the game without the upgrade and if not can you turn off that god awful ping sound that is constant?
