2.0 out of 5 stars Feels Marketed, August 10, 2012
This review is from: Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into your Comfortable Life (Paperback)
I'm thankful for any book that tries to break us out of our comfortable lives; however, I kept tripping over the marketing in this book. The seemingly endless recommendations felt like the author talked to everyone he did and didn't know to share a favorable blurb. I'd probably attempt the same in his position, but it was a little too much. Unfortunately, it set a tone throughout the book that was hard to escape - should we be wrecked, or should we build a platform about how we've been wrecked that is endorsed by others? Perhaps there's more to this book than that, but the filter was hard to escape since by page 21 I was still reading a recommendation.

Thanks for the honest review, Tony.

Got a little carried away with the endorsements, eh? That's a fair critique. Honestly, since this was my first trade book, I wanted to do everything I could to overcome people's objections to reading it. Being a new author, I knew I'd have to convince people why it was worth their time. Asking for notable names to endorse it was my way of doing that (which I did because of my belief in the message and desire to get it out to as many people as possible).

But I hear you saying maybe I overdid that, and I appreciate the feedback. I'll try to apply it next time.

Your courteous and timely response to constructive criticism does you credit Mr. Goins. I wish more authors would be willing to face their critics directly without being defensive. Everybody wins. Good luck with the book.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply back. Like I said, I'd likely do it, too... it's tempting to let others endorse our stuff, but at some point a good point is a good point on its own. When I have some time, I'll try to reread it minus the introduction and see if something more positive stands out. You handled this critique well, and for that I'm thankful.
