Director Michelangelo Antonioni leads us on a bizarre and artsy journey between the real and the imagined through the psychedelic scene of 1960's London. David Hemmings who nicely plays disillusioned photographer Thomas, is taking a break from his hectic schedule. Strolling through a local park with camera in hand he is casually taking pictures of sights and scenes. He espies a couple in amorous embrace and innocently takes a series of photographs of them. The woman, Jane played by Vanessa Redgrave is visibly upset and demands that Hemmings give her the photos. He blows her off and leaves the park.
Hemmings returns to his flat and studio and who should turn up but Redgrave. She tries to seduce him in an attempt to procure the film but Hemmings gives her a different roll of film instead.
After Redgrave departs Hemmings heads to his darkroom to develope the film of the couple in the park. One photograph in particular interests him and he begins blowing up different segments of the photo to discover a figure with a pistol hidden in the bushes. A subsequent photo blown up shows an apparent body lying on the ground. Has a murder been committed?
Hemmings rushes back to the park where he discovers the corpse of the gent that he saw with Regrave. Hemmings is at a loss as to what to do and meanders through a wild rock concert featuring music legends Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck of the Yardbirds and a subsequent pot party at his friends house, while attempting to reason things out.
Hemmings awakens the next morning and rushes back to the park. He finds that the corpse is no longer there. Did he actually witness a murder or were his mind and camera playing tricks on him?
