Learned so much,
This review is from: The Gospel and Letters of John, Volume 1: Introduction, Analysis, and Reference (Eerdmans Critical Commentary) (Paperback)
I have studied the books for six months now and I have not read a commentary on the bible that has helped me more than this one.
Dr. Wahlde shows in his books how the gospel of john was added to or changed three different times. The changes help our understanding of Jesus and what his coming to earth meant to us.
To me the book shows how the church expanded its understanding of Jesus and his work done on this earth. If the church expanded the understanding of Jesus after Jesus returned to the Father, then the mission of the church must be the same today as it was yesterday.
This brings into focus the belief that the bible is frozen in stone and is sufficient in itself for believers to follow.
I was raised in the Methodist church but have recently started becoming part of the Catholic Church and this book has been helpful to me.
It is not difficult to read at all, though it is long. Dr. Wahlde has put the books together in a way that they are easy to follow and you can even skip to the back and just read the conclusions if you want to shorten up the read.
I love the book and recommend it to believers to deepen their faith and to just "spend some time with the early believers".
