If most of the public's lasting impression of Manute Bol is the regrettable Celebrity Boxing appearance, The Defender does its very best to place into context the circumstances for which Bol found himself against the Fridge. Like the better articulated sports stories, The Defender goes well beyond sports and the role its central figure plays in it - it brings you to arenas farther than sports, than scores and statistics. What Conn does well is guide the reader through choices Bol had to make, and succinctly explain the lasting footprints he left as consequences of his actions. Conn humanizes a man who was generous, caring and very prideful. It's an excellent piece of journalism that hopefully will erode any lasting link between Celebrity Boxing and Manute Bol.
