3.0 out of 5 stars Be advised: widescreen version is not uncut., September 1, 2005
This review is from: The Muppet Christmas Carol (DVD)
This DVD contains a 4:3 version and a 16:9 widescreen version.

Disney Home Video reps have confirmed that only the 4:3 pan & scan version is the home video version which contains the full version of this movie. The widescreen version is the theatrical cut and does not include the song "When Love is Gone".

"The widescreen version is the theatrical cut and does not include the song 'When Love is Gone'. "

This, in my opinion, is the best reason to watch the widescreen version; it saves having to fast-forward past that song.

No. Seriously. Was she related to somebody to get that put in? It's such a strange blemish on an otherwise phenomenal movie.

Every year at Christmas time our family has watched this on VHS since it was released. It is a favorite and anticipated tradition, but we all knew when it was time to leave the room, mute the sound, or hit the fast forward. This year we finally broke down and bought the 50th anniversary edition and it was a pure treat. Disney chose good. At last we get DVD quality in a wide-screen format without that lousy song. The love is gone and good riddance.

The song is great and for it to be cut is a crime. The tears on Scrooge and Rizzo make no sense in the cut version.

I think you're missing the point, the song wasn't in the theatrical release, so how could it have been cut if it wasn't included to begin with? I think it's great that they included both versions of the film.

When Love Is Gone does exist in the widescreen print used on the LaserDisc.

May I expand upon this old comment?
When the film was originally filmed, When Love Is Gone was filmed as well, and part of the film. However, they cut it out when it was released theatrically, and released on most of the VHS film editions, although some countries didn't get it. So, to those countries, this would be an "uncut" film. So, the fullscreen version includes a scene that wasn't in the original film, to some people.

Had this Blu-ray version in my cart until I read comments stating "When Love is Gone" was cut out from this disc. Very disappointed & have removed from my cart until it is offered to include this song. So we will continue watching our original DVD every year!

IMHO, "When Love is Gone" is the emotional climax of the second part of the story (Christmas Past). As another poster remarked, without the song Rizzo's and Scrooge's tears make no sense. That sequence was originally created for an obvious purpose: The film is a musical, so there should be a song to mark the most significant loss in Scrooge's past. And Paul Williams has written a beautiful song, as usual. Without it we get a few words and then cut straight to some unmotivated crying. Also IMHO, she sings beautifully, and the shot where scrooge stands behind her and sings along is very touching. I saw the film for the first time on VHS, and I'm glad now I didn't see it in the theater. Without that song I don't think it would have left me wanting to see it again. As it is, we're stuck watching the full screen version. You'd think they could offer a widescreen version with a cut that has that song for those of us who don't enjoy the film without it.
