what jerry did on his days off,
This review is from: GarciaLive Volume One: March 1, 1980 Capitol Theatre (MP3 Music)
this jgb show comes from a run of shows just before the dead started a long tour that began at the capital theater and ran for most of the rest of 1980. as the new series of releases come our way from the new jerry garcia.com organization we can only hope this is just the beginning of many fun and interesting releases from jerry's archives. 3/1/1980 is a garcia band show which finds jerry in fine form. his voice sounds great, and we get a special appearance from his very close friend and writing partner,, robert hunter. this small fact is one cool reason to give this show a listen. nice song list with an interesting variety of garcia tunes. some work wonderfully and some not quite, but still worth a listen. sugaree starts things off on a good note and the crowd is fired up !! for me, catfish john works better as an acoustic piece. just my preference. how sweet it is finds jerry and the band bouncing along together in a nice groove. simple twist of fate is a pretty song and jerry's singing and delicate guitar work highlight the more relaxed atmosphere at a jgb show.. sitting in limbo, is beautifully done and couldn't be better. that's alright mama, brings the crowd back to it's feet but has me brainwashed as a merle and jerry tune so it takes alittle getting used too.. deal,, mission in the rain,, that's what love will make you do,, harder they come,,russian lullaby,, are real highlights,, all played superbly .jerry's guitar playing is super throughout and the trademark of the jgb sound which is oh,so cool and different from what he does with the dead...these are some of my favorite garcia/jgb tunes... then we are treated to the hunter numbers,, very unique style. you will be pleased to hear this,, a special treat and it's my guess the reason this show was picked as the first in this new series. the cd ends up with midnight moon light and dear prudence which i loved and is pure jerry .. fantastic.. all and all a nice night of music with jerry and the band....another reviewer compared this show to the kean college show from earlier in the same week,, to my ears that show is just a bit better,,, if you don't have either show start there and if you want more from this version of the jgb, then i think you will want this in your collection!!
