1.0 out of 5 stars Not for kids! Very inappropriate player content and online interaction!, March 10, 2009
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
Review for parents:
Not for kids! Very inappropriate player content and online interaction!
CCP are jerks for releasing this as 12+ ESRB. Not for kids!

Game creator is CCP, Iceland.

I agree that CCP created Game Content is ESRB Teen, However...
This game and CCP intentionally exploits a major loophole in the ESRB called Player Content. ESRB does not rate player content. Write the ESRB today to complain their policies.
Player Content is ESRB Mature+
CCP communicates and promotes a sexual, perverted, profane and drunken adult social community in this game. Bars and Night clubs are coming out within a year. View their fanfest 2008 dominination video on youtube to real people getting their heads blown off.

You have read what the game is about. Here is what kind of Player content your child will be exposed to.
The average age in game is high, about 28.
A group called SomethingAwful (search internet, CEO is in jail) largely controls the game at the moment and will have access to your child.
They run the largest in game entity called GoonSwarm, (youtube, somethingawful forums).
This sick organizations members and CCP are extremely perverted and have inundated the game with inappropriate player content.
Their members have a majority of the Game Manager positions working for CCP in Iceland and ignore all parental complaints.

Your child will be exposed to:
Inappropriate chat discussions
Inappropriate voice discussions (both the games integrated voice chat, teamspeak, and ventrilo)
Links to porn sites in chat
Sexual stories from other players

Inappropriate Jokes to include: Racism, Sex, Politics, Drugs.
Your child will "hear" people doing drugs.
Your child will "hear" people drunk.
CCP the maker of eve will broadcast fanfest events through the ingame voice system. Your child will hear inappropriate things during their presentations.
While flying through space systems your child will see and be overwhelmed with content named with inappropriate names. I once saw someone had their ships out and they were all named a modified version of penis.

You will not be able to protect your child:
There is "No" in-game method or mechanism to shield your child from this player content.
There are "No" chat filters
The same person that posts links to porn will be talking to your child

I am a long time player of MMO's and of all the games I have played this game is the worst for nasty player content and interaction with a shocking lowest ESRB rating. In comparison to other companies CCP does absolutely nothing to counter this type of behavior. Not even a chat filter. Don't buy this for your kids unless they are 18.

Just for a simple comparison for parents if I had to choose the lesser of two evils between Grand Theft Auto and Eve Online I would have to go with Grand Theft Auto.

The review is suppose to be about the quality of the game and not weather you feel something is right for children or not. If you had any clue, the ESRB independently rates software. CCP does not set the ESRB rating. Any parent who would do even a few minutes of research would find that this is a mature game and not intended for children. If you are worried about completely censoring and filtering every person you interact with, you should NOT be playing on line games of ANY type.

Eve, consisting of real people, has its share of those inappropriate for 12 year olds. Do you let your child have free reign on the internet? If so, nothing they see in the game will be any worse than they can find on google. However, much like the rest of the web, 95% of the game's population are decent people. Most of them will tone down any language if they know a kid's listening. If your child wants to play this game, but your worried about content, get an account for you and one for them and play together. Eve is fun for adults too, and it will make a good bonding experience. Join a laid back, mature group with your son or daughter, a group that respects some boundaries you agree on. Believe it or not, you can certainly find those groups with a little looking.

"Sounds" like a "good" time.

Very good advice, I play with a group of people who fit the above classification (no were that bad guys :P ) yet we have a father/son team that plays together and have for several years now. Good parents make for a good gaming experience, its not up to the content providers or the ERSB to do your job for you.

I am one of those something awful dot com members and having access to the entire eve communities children is a power I was unaware of. If I had to take a random shot at this review I would say some random goon(Thats the slang for a member of somethingawful.com) scammed this individual out of his hard earned isk/ships(Which can only be done with his complete and blind consent), filed a petition against that individual and was told that scamming is completely within game mechanics and decided to quit. That being said these types of people won't read this review until after the fact and I dont think anyone should buy this game for children.(If you want to hand over a large sum of money or in game items for absolutely no collateral you can, but don't expect someone to come bail you out when you get shafted especially a gm)

Also a large portion of this post consisted of the posters obvious inability to exert any sort of control over what his child accesses or does on the internet. I assure you there are large communities of people in every MMO that are based around a family oriented atmosphere. As other people have said its the parents job to decide what games are ok for their children, not a governments.

When I was a kid Doom sure as heck didn't have a rating but I wasnt allowed to play it :)

Hell that sounds like real life in many ways. If you don't wont to expose your children to SEX, POLITICS, RACISM, and DRUGS your going have to lock them up because most of your public schools are packed with it and keeping them away from a video game is not going to fix the problem. I prefer the little kiddies to stay off the server and go play WOW. It was a review on a game not MORALS so please go preach somewhere else.
Thank you.

Austin Wise says:
On the website next to the ESRB rating and when you start the game it says "Online interaction not rated by the ESRB". Since the whole point of the game is "online interactions", it is subject to the same possibility of crudeness that surfing the web has. But also like the internet, you are more likely to see that sort of content if you are seeking it out. If you are part of a NPC corp in high-security space, as ~75% of players are, chances are you will not see any of this. I have some characters in NPC corps and the most offensive thing I have seen in the corp chat is the occasional curse word.

First of all, no one "controls" the game when it comes to the player base. Yeas Somethingawful has a alliance named Goonswarm that controls a part of "null sec" but so does several other alliances. And anyone starting off as a new player will not be exposed that much to these entities because frankly they will not want anything to do with you until you can fly something that can be totally fitted out with the best stuff (T2). For the most part people start out in NPC corps with other people starting the game.

as for chat filters. there are none but in seriousness if you have any idea what your kid actually hears on the street and at school you would have reliesed that that people in this game are not as vulgar as you claim. as for racist comments, those are pettitionable.

this game is not meant for anyone under the age of 12 on the bases that it is so complex that they will lose intrest in it very fast. You have to know how the basics of an economy works, diplomacy, tatics, and patience to be able to play this.

I have been playing for over 4 years now and I can say that this game is nowhere near as bad as this review is trying to make it out to be. I have had fathers getting their 10 year old sons jump in the game. All they need is a little guidence on how things work and 9 out of 10 people in this game will treat your kid like family.
