5.0 out of 5 stars No-Brainer Lens, December 5, 2011
This review is from: Sony Alpha SAL35F18 35mm f/1.8 A-mount Wide Angle Lens (Black) (Electronics)
The Sony AF DT 35mm f/1.8 SAM is an "easy choice" lens in every sense of the term. It's light, inexpensive, highly useful, and the image quality is excellent. It focuses close enough for the macro-curious, at least closer than is practical without a tripod and a stationary subject. Head shots at f/1.8 are attractive and sharp enough for eyes and lips. It's tack sharp from f/2.8 to f/8, and what little light fall-off there was at f/1.8 has disappeared in this range, too. Simple red/cyan chromatic aberration appears in this range also, but it is minimal, predictable, and easy to correct in most RAW developers. The barrel distortion is more noticeable than you would expect from a "normal" prime lens, but it is simple and pleasing. The bokeh isn't as "crisp" as in the 50/1.8 SAM, but it's still very attractive, and I prefer the 35mm focal length over that lens anyway.

The downsides are few, but worth considering: The image circle is large enough for APS-C cameras only, so it has only limited utility on film or full-frame D-SLRs. "SAM" auto-focus means you can't use any AF/MF toggle on your camera body, just the switch on the lens. Also, there's no depth-of-field scale to benefit manual focusing. Finally, the very worst thing about this lens is that it causes you to neglect the more expensive lenses in your system.

Get it. Enjoy it. Remember to use your other lenses every once in a while, too.

Did you buy from Amazon, and if so, did it come with a hood? The Sony Style site sells it for the same price and then wants $20 for a hood. I saw that Amazon said it includes a hood, but just wanted to be sure.
Thanks for a helpful review!

K. Barrett says:
I think mine came from another online retailer, but yes, the hood was included in the box. Sony does sell the hood independently if you want a replacement, and for some reason they felt this was important enough to put in one of their press releases, which confused a lot of people. The same hood (ALC-SH111) comes with both the SAL-35F18 and the SAL-85f28, by the way.

I brought mine from Amazon this week and got the hood included without an additional charge.
