Too many propblems,
This review is from: Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player (Old Model) (Electronics)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I've owned and used several different media streamers, including an older version of the Roku and both the WD TV and it's replacement the Western Digital WD TV Live Plus . All of them have worked well enough, and my preference has always been the Western Digital devices, mainly because I preferred their user interface. The WD devices are not nearly as versatile however, as their not built on a Linux platform like the Roku. I appreciate having access to a variety of user generated programs and games, like a much less polished android marketplace.
One of my main standards of quality is reliability. In an 'all in one' device like a media streamer, I want them to be solidly reliable and usable by other non tech savvy family members. That's where the Roku falls short. Adding channels to the streamer is a bit of a pain, and finding information (like user reviews of channels) should be integrated like in the Android Market Place so that you know what you're getting into before paying for access. The process is a bit clunky, and not really something that non-techy folks will want to bother with.
The main issue I have with the Roku is it's all-to-frequent reboots. It reboots when adding channels, when streaming files, and for no apparent reason what-so-ever. It's frustrating how often this happens.
The WIFI network connection is relatively weak. If you want to use this device to it's capacity, I highly recommend using a wired LAN connection.
When it's working as it should, it's excellent. Streaming NetFlix or playing my media collection is seamless, and still much better than many of the alternatives. However, the firmware needs some bugs worked out to get rid of the annoyance of random reboots.
Overall, it's a good but not excellent device.
