5.0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect, May 9, 2011

Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System (Electronics)
Overall, I'm very happy with this system, however I really wanted to give it a 4.5 rating.
- Sound quality is very good, but finding the right sound mode for a source is imperative.
- Bass is incredible, I can feel the vibrations clear across the house when bass rich music is playing.
- LOTS of input options, I could hook up every piece of AV equipment I've ever owned.
- Lots of different sound modes to get a particular source sounding the way you want
- Audyssey was easy to use to get sound settings configured for my room and speaker setup

I only have three disappointments with this system, but they're pretty minor.
- It does not up convert non-HDMI video inputs to HDMI which I hadn't thought of when buying this and wish I had.
- The Subwoofer gives off a quiet electrical hum, like power lines or old fluorescent lights.
- OSD only works with HDTV resolution signals 480, 720, 1080. Only bothersome due to my projector being 1280 x 800

For the record, I don't hear any hum coming off my sub, so it may be something particular to one you received. There is currently a recall on the sub by Onkyo for this model and the previous 5300. I don't appear to need to send mine back, but you might want to look into it. Here's the official word on the issue by Onkyo:

Sub-Woofer Speaker Driver Replacement Program
07/19/11 - Onkyo USA has determined that there is a high probability that the voice coil of certain subwoofers in the Home Theater and Speaker systems listed below may open; consequently, the subwoofer will stop functioning.

For our valued customers, Onkyo USA has a speaker driver replacement program for the affected subwoofers. It is important that you check the model and serial number of your subwoofer.

Please click on the following link for more infomation on whether your subwoofer is eligible.
http://www.onkyousa.com/001_modelreturn_entertype.cfm

If you are eligible for this program, an Independent Onkyo Regional Service Center will send you material and instructions to return your subwoofer.

You can also contact Onkyo USA Customer Support during normal customer support hours (M-F 9am-8pm and Sat-Sun 10am-4pm ET) to see if your subwoofer falls under this speaker driver replacement program. Call toll free 1-855-460-1618 or local (201)785-2654.

Hi there and thanks for a review with some great information. I'm wondering how the system has worked for you since you wrote the review. The HT-S6300 has a lot of negative reviews about problems with overheating and with the HDMI output.......so though the 6300 has a few more bells and whistles, I'm considering the 5400 right now. I'd love to know how it has been after you've had it for a while.......thanks for any help you can provide!

Oh, sorry. I deleted it because I thought maybe you wanted only replies from the reviewer you replied to. I was just going to point out that its probably the case that whatever issue you're having with your sub, it probably falls under Onkyo's sub recall. I bet it wouldn't be an issue at all to send it back if you just go to the website link I posted in my original reply in this thread.

Ya I already tried that and they said my sub wasn't under the recall, and my system is on the recall list, I dont know why?

Oh wow. That sucks. I'm eligible for the recall, and actually contacted them to get the box to ship the sub back (which they've since sent, and I've received), but haven't gotten around to it. I'm not having any issues with my sub at this point, so that's mostly why I'm procrastinating.
