Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Magellan RoadMate 5045-LM 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Maps and Traffic (Electronics)
I just bought this for my dear old mom, who can't ever seem to remember how to drive to my house 2 hours away, in Boston. She lives in NH, and comes down to the "Big City" every 2-3 months, and I'm sick of spending 45 minutes on the phone holding her hand coming to my place everytime, so I figured I'd buy this for her. To get her started, and to make sure that she will actually use it, I decided to load a bunch of addresses into the system before putting it under the tree for christmas. Here's my take on the first 3 hours of trying to get this &*#$@*!(& thing started:
1 - There are no installation instructions included, and it's seems like it's only compatible with a PC, so if you use a Mac, you're dead meat. Plus, when you try to go online to the link they tell you register at, the link is broken. (It will take you approx. 15-30 mins to figure out what you have to do next - which is way too long in today's world, am I right?).
2- The battery in the unit is not pre-charged, so i can't turn it on until the battery charges. I plugged it into my PC through a USB cable, but it won't charge the device. In order to charge the battery, I will need to go out to my car, start my car, and finish reading War and Peace while letting this thing drain my car battery - who knows how long that will take? My guess is at least 2 hours. Can't they just make the damn thing charge through my computer's USB connection? JC.
3- There doesn't appear to be any kind of way I can add in my addresses from my PC and sync them to the device, but who knows- maybe there is and it will just take me more time to figure it out.
Overall - not user friendly to install, no assistance docs, battery is initially dead, and I feel like returning it ASAP.
