2.0 out of 5 stars Sony 3-D camcorder a real disapointment, May 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony HDR-TD10 High Definition 3D Handycam Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom (Silver) (Electronics)
IMPORTANT OCTOBER 2011 UPDATE: Please read my review on the Cody portable 3-D player model.....
TF3DVD7019.....Avallable here on Amazon.com

I waited so long for this new Sony 3-D camcorder only to discover when it arrived that it's not possible to view 3-D videos anywhere except with the Camcorder connected with it's HDMI connection or with the camera's 3 1/2 inch screen.
Sony praises the fact that everything you shoot in 3-D is also viewed in 2-D but who cares?
I want to be able to make a AVCHD disc watchable in 3-D on any bluray 3-D player. The panasonic does so why not the Sony?
In fact, The SD memory card from this camcorder is not recognized by the Sony direct disc recorder but the SD card from Panasonic's 3-D camcorder is recognized instantly and in just a few minutes I have a disc copy that plays on any Bluray 3-D player on a 3-D TV just like the 3-D bluray movies.
If you're able to watch the videos you shoot with this Sony elsewhere like with a computer, you'll only be able to see it in 2-D.
I sent mine back for a full refund.
UPDATE:
Before returning this camcorder to Amazon for a refund I thought I would try to watch the 3-D videos in my Toshiba laptop which includes Nvidia 3-D.
No such luck.
It's kind of funny in a way because the cheap Aiptek 3-D camera from China priced at $139.00 works great with the laptop because they were smart enough to be recognized with Nvidia 3-D.
Than I attempted view the 3-D videos on my Acer laptop with a Tri-Def 3-D screen and once again no such luck.
The Acer does work great in 3-D with both Fuji 3-D camera models W1 and W3.
The Acer is also desinged to view 3-D from my old Toshiba 3-D camcorder I bought over 20 years ago which utilizes the Field sequential 3-D format.
Please note: I do not know if the current Acer 3-D laptop will work the same because it does not have the Tri-Def 3-D screen.
Niether laptop works with the Panasonic 3-D camcorder but who cares?
At least Panasonic 3-D videos can easily be copied to a AVCHD disc playable on any Bluray 3-D player and viewable in 3-D on any 3-D TV.
This new Sony 3-D camcorder does non of the above.
I personally do not like the idea of always having to use the camcorder anytime I wish to watch my 3-D videos in 3-D and that's why it's going back to Amazon for a refund.
By the way....In case you're considering buying the new JVC 3-D camcorder ($1,698.00)
you might like to know it has the same lack of features as this Sony.
I read that in a review posted at B & H.

IMPORTANT UPDATE 9/4/11
Stereoscopic Viewer available at 3dtv.at now has an updated version which will now allow 3-D viewing from this Sony Camcorder on your computer.

IMPORTANT UPDATE OCTOBER 2011
Please read my review for the portable 3-D player......TF3DVD7019....available here on Amazon

I was able to view files in 3-D from the Sony Bloggie camera on my Toshiba 3-D laptop with Nvidia 3-D softwear.

dude, its just a matter of software update before you can create 3D disks...the camera is ahead of its time, you should have kept it to record memories now....even if you can't play them back until the future comes.

I have the 2010 Acer laptop model which feaures a Tri-Def 3-D screen and it plays the Fuji W1 & W3 video and photos in 3-D.
I am not sure if the current Acer 3-D laptop available will work the same because it does not have the Tri-Def 3-D screen

Stereoscopic player has just released a new version that supports the MVC videos from the Sony. I have the Toshiba 3-D laptop and it is the only way to view the videos right now. they also have a conversion program that will convert the MVC to 2 AVI files for editing on a lot of consumer programs. The player is around $60 but it will also let you play field sequential movies as well. I also want to say that the quality of the 3-D playback is not what I was expecting. I have the Sony HDR-XR520V that uses the Exmor sensor and that camcorder's picture quality is outstanding! The TD-10's quality is grainy in 3D. Very dissapointing. I still need to shoot more footage to really get a feel for it but it's not near what I thought it should be. The crosstalk on my Samsung 55" 3D tv with this camcorder is really bad! On the laptop it's still there but not as bad as on the bigger screen. I'll go out on a limb and say that's it might be the Samsung glasses and not the camcorder or the TV. I'd also like to point out that the 3.5" screen in 3D mode is not as bad as every review I've read so far. It's clear and the 3D effect is decent when you find the sweet spot.

R. L. Epps says:
MVC is the codec sony uses and is the same standard as 3d blu-ray. it's basicly the h.264 mpeg4 video codec with depth data interlaced in so as to not have a large video file with a lot of repeat information. it also has the advantage of being able to play the same file in 2d on displays that dont recognise the depth data interlaced into the file.

editing however, and playback on some computer programs that dont recognise or author files to the full h.264 codec for 3d, might have problems without an update.

the panasonic uses a side by side format under the inferior avchd codec. that's why it plays on just about anything, is not letterbox 16:9, (is not even close to true HD), and is easy to edit on existing software that can handel that codec even in 2d because there is no techical difference in the file itself.

something to note as well, i believe that while the sony can handel true 1080/60p for 2d, i believe 3d is shot in 1080/60i.

You should know that Pana's camcorder can replay only a half-resolution of full HD unlike Sony's. If you get a Sony BD recorder available in Japan, you can burn full HD 3D videos on Bluray discs.

In reply to an earlier post on May 31, 2011 6:11:56 AM PDT
I knew that the Sony 3-D camcorder is full HD resolution but I did not know that Sony has their 3-D camcorder available in Japan that will burn to Bluray discs.
That's my point!
When Sony gets around to making it available to us in the U.S.A. please let me know.
Thank You.

The 3D camcorder Sony is selling in Japan is exactly the same as the one sold in here. The thing is that Sony is not selling bluray disc recorders in the US. Actually no manufacturers are selling bluray disc recorders in this country!

R. L. Epps says:
he said BD "recorder" , not camcorder. same camcorder, but in japan there's a newer sony one touch standalone BD "recorder".

the camcorder is not the issue there, the blu-ray 3d mvc codec not yet filtering down to consumer level computer editing programs is. seeing as the hdr-td10 is the only consumer level full hd camcorder that far ahead of the game, and is more than 3 times the cost of most good full hd 2d camcorders, that's understandable, but that will likely change soon.
