This review is from: Retro SEGA Saturn USB Classic Controller - White (Video Game)
Despite having the design of the popular Sega Saturn controller, the quality of this controller is far below par and anyone who spends a significant amount of time on retro and/or 2D gaming on the PC or PS3 will be better off investing their time and money in acquiring a genuine SLS Sega USB controller.
Several years ago, SLS (Sega Logistics Service) released their official Sega Saturn-style control pads in Japan for the PS2 and for PC/Mac in an assortment of colors. Since they are a perfect replica of the Saturn control pad (the greatest 2D controller of all time), they were wildly popular. At only around $35, the demand by far exceeded the supply. SLS manufactured them again in late 2008 and Chinese sellers flooded eBay with them, but quickly selling out once again. Unfortunately, SLS has not made any more since, and we are now left with two options; either buy these cheap but crappy knockoffs from Gtron, Retrolink and other crap brands (which all probably come from the same factory). Or pay top dollar in the rare instances that the genuine SLS brand control pads appear on eBay and Yahoo Japan Auctions. I did both- I shelled out $50.00 for a used SLS Sega USB control pad on eBay. I also ordered a Retrolink brand and GTron. The difference in quality is night and day: *Genuine SLS Sega Control Pads (the ones I recommend)*- the d-pad is textured and movement is smooth, precise and solid, producing slight but discernable clicks. The buttons are responsive; not too soft but not too hard to the push. They are perfectly compatible with the PS3, with the X, Y and Z buttons lining up with PS3 square, triangle, and L2, and A B C with X O R2. The shoulder buttons match R1 & L1. They're also perfectly compatible with 2D PS1 games played on the PS3. Whether you are playing on the PC/ Mac or PS3, this controller is simply the best for 2D and some 3D fighters as well as shoot'emups, beat'emups, and the majority of retro puzzle games. *Retrolink/ GTron knockoff Saturn-style control pads (the ones I am reviewing right now)* - the d-pad is made from hard plastic and movement is mushy and loose. Not very accurate either in the diagonals. The buttons are quite stiff, especially the shoulder buttons. They are not always responsive, either. These controllers are only partially compatible with some PS3 2D games, but the button configuration is completely screwed up; the 'start' button acts as 'select,' the B button is X, C is O, A is square, etc... They are not at all compatible with PS1 games played on the PS3. Final verdict; if you are a casual gamer and don't spend a lot of time gaming on your PC/ Mac and don't wanna spend a lot of money on a controller and don't care about non-responding buttons screwing up your game, then the GTron Sega Saturn pad is for you. For those who spend more than a few hours weekly gaming on the PC and/ or want a controller fully compatible with the PS3; I recommend looking for the Sega SLS Control Pad. You will find it once in a while on eBay, but it can also be found on Yahoo Japan auctions by entering "sega kontrouru paddo" in Katakana into the search. Use a proxy service to bid and buy! They are by far much better than any of the control pads that third party companies like Madcatz, GTron, or Retrolink have ever done. |
