5.0 out of 5 stars The best book by far on the history of the search for "El Dorado", February 2, 2011
This review is from: Phoenix: The Search for El Dorado (Phoenix Press) (Paperback)
I don't understand why there are so few reviews for this book on Amazon, only one. Perhaps it seems to be such an esoteric subject to most people, I don't know. There are many reviews for Hemming's companion book, "the Conquest of The Incas". This book is perhaps even better, as I believe it involved more research and it deals with a subject that has been generally ignored by historians of Latin American for some reason; that is the exploration of the northern portion of South America, specifically. We know the search for the "Gilded Man" etc. has been dealt with quite a bit, but the specific exploration of Colombia, Venezuela, the region of the Guianas, and the conquest of the Chibcha Indians much less so. Also this book has something to satisfy the taste of almost any intelligent reader; exotic history, adventure, aboriginal customs, buried treasure, greed, back-stabbing, brutality, perseverance, courage, you name it and again, exploration! This book is not for the the lover of shallow romance novels. It is for the intelligent reader that does not try to morally judge events of the past, which in any case cannot be changed. This book particularly interests me as I lived and owned a house in a region the book covers; the province of Norte de Santander in eastern Colombia., where the conquistadors supposedly buried treasure. The part of the book where the conquistadors of the Federmann expedition encounted dwarf Indians in what is now Venezuela still haunts me. Who were they? What happened to them? I do not believe it was a figment of the conquistadors imagination [like the Amazons] as it seems to be well documented. [see page 21 in book] If you are interested in the history of exploration and you don't read this you are missing a delight!
