Faces of Learning are stories of fifty people and their learning experiences. The Rethink Learning Now is a national grassroots effort of nearly forty education and civil rights organizations which joined forces to change the present-day school culture of testing, in which we overvalue basic-skills reading and math scores and the undervalue of just about everything else, to a culture of learning which restores a core of conditions to create a powerful learning environment. Participants were given the opportunity to reflect on what they knew to be true about meaningful learning and teaching by responding to two prompts. The challenge to the reader is how can we use this information to improve our schools. At the end if each chapter, there are recommendations, resources, and follow-up links for more information. In the United States public education reaches 90% of every new generation. The mission is to prepare young people to be thoughtful and active participants in a democratic society. Readers will enjoy the stories and are encouraged to reflect on what was meaningful to them during their lives. The stories are charming, moving, and motivating. Parents, teachers, and administrators will find a wealth of information to challenge, engage, and support life-long learners. If the learning process is to be relevant and connected to young people, communities as well as individuals need to be involved.
