worked as advertised, great price, very functional, nice and shiny. not sure if i'll have a use for the strainer part but no big deal either.

It's not a strainer. It's not a stockpot---though it can be used that way. It's not a pasta pot. the tipoff is that it is a Mexican brand. (Of course, like all cookware nowadays, it's made in China.) It IS a Tamallera---for making tamales. That's why the steamer insert is so close to the bottom. The tamales are wrapped in corn husks and stand on end while steaming so there has to be a lot of room above the platform. Like most plain aluminum pots, it has hotspots but since it's primarily a steamer, it does not have to spread the heat evenly over the bottom. But the water doesn't care.
