5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing... Expectations exceeded, April 30, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Wool Omnibus Edition (Wool 1 - 5) (Silo series) (Kindle Edition)
First, the negatives.

Okay, now to the positives. The plot, the characters, the ideas, the writing... All amazing. The author has created something truly great here. I had never read anything by Hugh Howey before, but based solely on this omnibus edition of "Wool", he has been added to my personal top 5 list of sci-fi authors.

This is truly immersive story-telling, with well-developed, complex, believable characters, amazingly descriptive prose, jaw-dropping plot developments, deep concepts, and one kickass storyline. The last book that impressed me so thoroughly was "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons. "Hyperion" had a more mystical quality, wheras "Wool" is somehow more gritty and real. Both are examples of superior science fiction.

I am so happy to have discovered "Wool"... It has revived in me a love of reading that I thought I'd lost. Thank you, Hugh Howey.

If it's even in the same universe as Hyperion, it'll be worth the read. Thanks for the review.

Hello! Thank you for all your reviews, which are very thoughtful, but most especially for this one. I've just finished the first installment and can't wait to read the rest of the story! Oh, and you reminded me that I still need to read Hyperion. Lucky girl, huh?!

I, for one, did not like Hyperion. I just found it hard to read through it. Too much insignificant babble, IMO. Too prosaic. I've read many other popular Sci-Books (Dune, Forever War, all of Asimov, Starship Troopers, Old Man's War, Rama, Ender and more). Of those, Ender's Game, The Forever War and Old Man's War were those I enjoyed the most recently because the stories were fast paced and never dragged along.

But then I discovered Wool just a few weeks ago, and I could not stop reading. Got the sequels as well, and pre-ordered the upcoming one. Howey created a story in which its episodes could be standing by themselves, yet I was pleasantly surprised how they slowly fit together like puzzle pieces - and quite unexpectedly to me (well, I'm not the brightest mind on this planet). Howey must have planned well ahead, even though the first releases did not suggest so (to me). It's simply a joy to read on and learn new things, see how mysteries unravel, and overall get pulled into a gripping story with interesting characters.

In a way, this might not even be called real Sci-Fi, but that doesn't matter - it's a story that clearly plays our near future, and in one we could even be part of - in a way. I don't remember many books in which I relate so well to the story and its protagonists.

Thanks, T.! That's an incredible heap of praise. I hope DUST wraps up things in a way that doesn't detract from your opinion of the series!
