Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kaito Voyager Pro KA600 Digital Solar Dynamo Crank Wind Up AM/FM/LW/SW & NOAA Weather Emergency Radio with Alert & RDS, Flashlight and Reading Lamp + Smart Phone Charger, Black (Electronics)
It does everything it says it does. Its AM-FM reception is just OK. The weather channel reception is excellent. The features are plentiful, especially the power options.
Here is why I knocked off two stars.
1. The sound is remarkably tinny. No, I don't expect Bose-quality sound. But neither did I expect $9.99 pocket radio sound either. Hey, this radio is close to 80 bucks. It is at the 95th percentile in price compared to most emergency crank radios. But its sound quality is much closer to pocket radio than Bose. It is good enough for voice in a quiet environment, but music, or voice in a noisier environment and it scores "unacceptable" in my opinion.
2. The controls are remarkably complex. Yes, with this many features you have to expect some level of complexity. And yes, I read the features list on the Amazon site. But I failed to realize that a radio that is designed to be used primarily for emergency use involves infrequent use. And infrequent use demands clear cut, straight forward, single function, and well-marked controls. Many of the controls on this radio require either multiple presses or they have multiple functions. If this radio is ignored for a few weeks it takes awhile to understand the controls again. And that is not good in an emergency.
For gadget lovers like me, it is a marvelous thing. And I probably will appreciate it in an emergency. But designers could do better with sound quality and simpler controls.
