Excellent witty erudite and personal perspective on Central Europe,

I'm deeply grateful to Simon Winder for making sense of the divided lands of greater Habsburgia across five centuries of mayhem, catastrophe, nationalist competition and extraordinary cultural contribution. I've come to this vast space later in life than Mr Winder, and was drawn to its rich history and culture yet puzzled by the jigsaw like configuration of ethnic, linguistic and religious affiliations. This is a book that flowers in the soil of its author's fascination with the peculiarities of civilisation in the Danube hinterland - explaining, questioning, joking, testing, emoting and ultimately celebrating an empire that has been misunderstood and underestimated in the English speaking world. We're going back to Central Europe in 2014 with Mr Winder's book in hand!
