Don't bother with cheap imitations,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Apple 5W USB Power Adapter (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I bought an adapter a year ago that wasn't Apple's and it stopped charging my iPod Touch a few months ago. Better to forgo imitations and get the Apple adapter in the first place. Very small and removes easily from the outlet when not in use.

So true! This genuine Apple product is pricey, but at least it is safe.
Cheap USB chargers can expose both you and the device you are charging to 340volts dc if something goes wrong. That will definitely fry the device being charged.
Electrical Engineer Ken Shirriff tore down an Apple iPhone charger on his blog and compared it to cheap chargers. He concluded it is safer, actually meets UL standards and reduces EMI interference. Ken wrote "Apple's design provides extra safety...the super-strong AC prongs, and the complex over-temperature / over-voltage shutdown circuit. Apple's isolation distances...go beyond the regulations."
