Wonderful Stuff, again,
This review is from: You Could Have It So Much Better (Audio CD)
I think that some reviewers SO expect a sophomore slump that they hear one anyway, even when there isn't one. Such is the case with FF here. This follow-up record isn't one iota worse than their debut. In many ways, it's more confident.
Franz Ferdinand has a sound so distinct they could patent it. They rock and keep rockin'...and if you don't believe me, listen to just snippets of Evil and a Heathen, I'm Your Villain (the hooky bassline nicked from The Clash's Train in Vain...but improved upon!), You're The Reason I'm Leaving, and Outsiders. This group is fun to listen to it's like an illegal drug.
Why not 5 stars then? Only, because it's VERY similar to their 1st effort, almost interchangeably so. For instance, the final song, Outsiders, is very similar to the final song on their first cd, 40'. They both employ melodicas at the end, I believe, and virtually the same tempo (still, they are both GREAT tunes!). I would have liked a little variation, development and maturity. I hope when they come back with album #3 they've added some new twists. In the meantime, this album is on high, heavy rotation. One of the best of the year!
