LOSS LEADER by Simon Haynes is an evil, eery and frightening tale. We are told the story of 4 crew members who are to take a step in space travel history that will see them launch in the ship Glory, along with 1000 colonists, all in cryo-pods, to sleep for 100 years until they come to a planet where they will begin a new colony in space. When they arrive, those they left behind will have been dead for at least 100 years. Those taking on this mission need to be sure it's what they want to do.
At the 35-year point, crew leader Erin Campsie, wakes up and remembers nothing about her life or where she came from. Fortunately, there is help in the cryo-tank that restores her memory and she decides to awaken other crew members. What they discover when they start looking around the ship is horrifying and not like anything they expected.
This is science-fiction, but the mission is set up under a large corporation. In our world today, we've heard of corruption among many large corporations, so why wouldn't there be corruption within the Reid Corporation, the one that handles the launch of the new colony in space?
This is a very well-written story. It is written in such a way as to be believable in the far future of our world. There is some humor along the way, but the ending will leave you shocked.
