"The Amityville Horror" isn't so Horrible,
After seeing the boring and sleep inducing trash film "Hide and Seek" a few months ago, I hesitated to take my 9 year old niece (I know it is rated "R", but her mother gave me permission
to take her) to see this movie for fear of wasting more money on
Hollywood garbage, but this film is actually pretty good.
It's edge of your seat suspense all the way, but it does contain too much blood and gore for children. My niece was squeezing my hand so tight during the film that I thought the circulation in my hand would stop! She kept asking me why the DeFeo brother killed his family, she didn't get the concept that he was possessed until I explained it a few times.
It is stated that the film is based on a true story, and my niece seemed to be shocked that everything she was seeing really happened, and kept asking me if it was really true, so I soft-peddled it and told her that every scene didn't necessarily happen that way in real life. She kept commenting on the tragic plight of Jody Defeo and felt really bad about her murder, relating to the cute little girl like herself.
Is this an Academy Award contender? No, but it is good entertainment, the acting is decent, and the suspense factor makes the grade. I would highly recommend seeing it, but keep the children home.
