Pillow works great, but badly needed washing first,
This review is from: Wedge Pillow for Acid Reflux. Doctor Recommended. Patented Folding Wedge Pillow for GERD, Sleep Apnea, Snoring. 32" L, 24" W, 7" H (Health and Beauty)I have severe reflux (GERD) and got the pillow several weeks ago to help myself sleep at night.
I was worried that it would be hard to sleep on, and seven inches tall seemed like a bit of a slant. But, it is made of a quite compressible hypoallergenic polyureathane foam that compresses down from seven inches to perhaps four when you are resting on it, and I had a good night's sleep, even the first night. The soft material is very comfortable, and my reflux is vastly improved. Having used it for several weeks, I don't expect to ever go back to a regular pillow.
Unfortunately, the pillow had a strong polyureathane chemical smell when it showed up. The smell was strong enough that it was unuseable. I brought it to bed briefly, but my wife insisted that I get it out of her bed, and I agreed.
The next day I washed the polyureathane foam in the bathtub with mild soap and water and wrung it out with my hands as best as I could. You can't machine dry polyureathane (it disintegrates), so I left it outside in the 85 degree California sun. After two days, I could still wring water out of it -- it wasn't getting dry. I then covered it with beach towels, and rolled it up tight using my knees. After repeating this three times with dry towels, it was noticeably lighter (less water trapped inside). I let it air dry for another day and called it done.
That did the trick, and now I use the pillow every night.
It is a very comfortable pillow and has solved my reflux issues. I am glad to have it, I just wish it was useable right out of the box.
Edit: MedSlant contacted me when they heard of the difficulties I had. They offered to send me a new pillow and expressed surprise -- they have had less than 10 complaints about odor in their 3 years of selling these pillows. I turned down the new pillow (mine smells fine now) and thanked them. Then they refunded my purchase (I never even asked!). They were very polite and I could not ask for a better customer support experience!

Thank your for describing how you helped reduce the odor. I would imagine that there are a lot people who could never tolerate such odors and who would never buy a foam pillow in the first place. Medslant's response that they had only received < 10 complaints strikes me as dubious. i wonder how carefully they record complaints. Of course, not everyone complains; some people blame themselves for not being able to tolerate these industrial-chemical products and other know enough to avoid them in the first place. I wonder if Medslant was suggesting that its wedge pillow doesn't typically smell that strong? I need a wedge but I would still be afraid to buy this one.

MedSlant was saying that the smell wasn't supposed to be that strong and that they don't typically show up smelly. I agree that < 10 is a dubious number -- it does mean that I'm not the only person to make that complaint. But, I do think that I was the exception. I have a strong sense of smell, but my wife does not. The smell was strong enough that she couldn't stand it ... which means that it would have been unuseable for just about anyone. This product has had enough positive reviews that it cannot possibly be that smelly for the other customers.
Two years later, I can honestly say that I would buy this product even if I knew that it would start off just as smelly the second time. Cleaning it was a headache ... but the cleaning worked, and two years later, I still use that same pillow every night. I've experimented with other products but have never found anything as good as this one.

I purchased a very similar item; probably the same thing from a different company, as I can't imagine they're all that different. The smell from the regular and memory foam contaminated my bed, clothes, you name it. In fact my wife also "kicked it out of bed". I aired that thing out for 2 weeks outside in the Northeast late winter- nice and breezy, but did not solve the problem. I called the company who offered to send me another one, as they thought there was a problem with the adhesives used to put the 2 foam layers together. Shipping back was not cheap, but I did get another one back. Guess what- same problem. I don't really use it, because I'm super-sensitive to any chemical odor.

Dec 2012: Purchased wedge and received today. No odor! I had emailed the seller asking about this issue and she said it was indeed a problem that had been fixed and not occurred since. I believe her. BTW, I layed down on pillow just to test, and nearly went to sleep.

Your review is excellent because I worried that 7 inches was not enough of an angle to make any difference. I was also worried about the chemical odor because I have Asthma and even the cleaning solution and soap aisle at the grocery store set me off. But to know there is a solution if it's too much is so gratifying! The fact that the company even reads their reviews and actually CARES is a real bonus! I will read a few more reviews and if there is nothing different, will purchase today!

I have Asthma and odor like this would sent me into an attack, so thanks to your review I'm able to avoid wasting $100.
