Can't an album just be great?,
This review is from: Is This It (Audio CD)
Yes, the hype has been silly. This isn't the new, new thing, and the Strokes aren't the saviors of rock (can we just cut it out with the "saving rock" crap once and for all?). "Is This It" is what it is (say that five times fast) -- a consistently exciting, strong and unpretentious debut. Not a bad track on it. What more do you want?
If you're expecting them to be creating a new genre or the next revolution, you will be disappointed. "Is This It" will have music enthusiasts thinking of Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" (but sweeter), Talking Heads "More Songs About Buildings And Food" (but less arty), Pavement's "Brilliant Corners" (but less whimsical) and Violent Femme's first album (but less tortured and goofy). Actually, the closest comparisons are Elastica's first and Weezer's most recent albums. Inventive power pop without frills or gimmicks and an appealing, consistent tone. Try it. You'll like it!
