I tried to give it 10 stars... but they won't let me,
This review is from: The Rise & Fall of Great Powers: A Novel (Hardcover)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have, on more than one occasion, resorted to paraphrasing my favourite quote from the late Roger Ebert: "A (work of art) is not about what it is about, but HOW it is about it"
A truly unique writer like Tom Rachman is EXACTLY what Ebert had in mind.
I avoided reading his first book, "The Imperfectionists" for the longest time.
What? Another tale of the "wacky" adventures of a group of reporters? Been there, Done that. Have the T-shirt.
Only... I HADN'T; I HADN'T; and they don't make a T-shirt big enough!
So, I wasn't going to make that mistake again!
If I tell you that Mr Rachman's latest is about a Welsh Bookseller's quest to understand her early life, you won't care.
So, let me tell you, instead:
THIS IS THE FUNNIEST, CLEVEREST, MOST INTERESTING, BEST WRITTEN BOOK YOU WILL READ THIS YEAR (unless you also read "The Imperfectionists") and if you truly care about unique and brilliant writing... memorable characters... and the art of literature... you will get this book!!!!!!!!!!!!
But, I may be wrong.
