This review is from: NHL 13 - Playstation 3 (Video Game)
I picked up this game after playing the recent 360/ps3 years and was excited about everything (except for seeing Giroux on the cover... but besides that). Typically whenever I buy the new year of NHL, it feels like a tough challenge to master and get good at. This one is taking much longer to get used to and I'm not so sure that it is a bad thing. It's honestly one of the hardest NHL games I've played, but I appreciate the fact that I need to work to get goals and that games can be close even at the standard difficulty level. Not every line you send out is going to get goals; you will probably need to realize if you've got a shutdown line out there, you probably shouldn't be pinching those guys up the ice to go for breakaways. The skating system is a learning curve, but I am starting to understand at what times you can use it to your advantage. Hitting also feels much different and I was disappointed at first, but then I realized you aren't going to see Patrick Kane putting a devastating check on Brooks Orpik or anything of that sort. It's not a perfect science yet, but in hindsight, I am glad to see that not every player on the ice is capable of taking someones head off (and yes, the skating/speed system definitely plays into hits). Basically, since we probably won't be seeing much hockey on the tube or in person this season, park yourself down with this game and have some patience. You may not win every time, but personally I grew bored of the old games when I never faced a challenge.
