Excellent story, phenomenal writing. I think much of this book's excellence comes from the fact that the author's roots are in historical fiction rather than fantasy. The quality of the writing is outstanding (a quality lacking in most Fantasy), and the pacing is just right. At times I felt the influence of Cormac McCarthy on Durham's writing style, which is as strong a compliment as I can give.
Despite the fast moving plot, it does pay to read this book carefully. Sometimes a momentous event or crucial piece of information will appear in a single sentence mid-paragraph, so you can't skim.
