5.0 out of 5 stars The most helpful GMAT prep material known to date., August 13, 2012
This review is from: Manhattan GMAT Complete Strategy Guide Set, 5th Edition [Pack of 10] (Manhattan Gmat Strategy Guides: Instructional Guide) (Paperback)
I got the 4th edition so I am using that as a reference. Note to current takers: GET THE NEW BOOKS - the GMAT has changed it's format this year and old books are no longer applicable.

Regardless, the Manhattan's style of learning is the best. After reviewing the tricks and advises in the books, I did the online practice and then finally the simulation tests which helped the most. The questions in the online test bank, especially those six full length online exams are EXTREMELY similar to the actual exam. The math problems are very challenging and some more challenging than the actual exam. Each mistake you make, the test bank will provide a detailed explanation of which strategy you should use and how to spot it. I recommend doing these online practice tests at least 3 times until you know them inside out.

B-schools focus greatly on quant so the more difficult quant questions really helps. A word of warning: if you THINK you are good at math and can do all the quant problems right on the official guide (a piece of #$%@#%!), you'll be disappointing. The office guide problems are WAY too easy and so is the official GMAT prep software. So far, the Manhattan exercises bears the most resemblance to the actual exam. I owned just about every book out there and none of which was as helpful as the Manhattan.

Some say verbal questions on Manhattan are easier than the actual exam, but I didn't feel that way. I was able to discover many neat tricks as I was practicing verbal and improved from a 29 Raw score to a 38.

The most useful too yet is how the Manhattan online software analyze your strengths and weaknesses. E.g. I was good at Geometry but was terrible at Combinatorics. The software analyzes every problem I did online and tells me that I was able to get many 700 level questions right on Geometry but I am only at 500-600 level for Combinatorics. This is very, very useful So I know exactly what I need to study.

FYI I improved from 620 to 730 after studying this. Good luck to all.

Hey Ryan,

I was just wondering if you used the Official Guide for the GMAT along with your Manhattan study materials and if it was helpful/productive to have both?

Ryan Huang says:
Yes, but official guide is relatively useless. This is only my opinion as everyone studies differently. I have a strong base so official guide problems were "too easy" for me. However, Manhattan do reference / assign OG exercises so there can't be any harm in that. As long as you don't "mistaken" these easy problems as how the official exam will be, you are ok.

Awesome, I ended up purchasing the OG to use as a reference while studying with the Manhattan strategy guides.

Thanks!

Hi Ryan,
Thank you for your comments!

Is the 5th Edition the most recent version?

Thanks,
Spencer
