Comparing Mastodon to typical metal (Avenged Sevenfold, HIM, Lacuna Coil)is like comparing Miles Davis to Kenny G. Yes you'll find them both filed under "Jazz" but each is a whole different beast. Some call this genre "thinking man's metal", I prefer to see it as a rock band not willing to cater to the whims of middle-aged suits or covet the glare of celebrity. This is metal with a work ethic that is not pretty and not for the faint of heart or the weak of mind. If you feel you're up to it, then welcome to Blood Mountain.

This album f'n ROCKS! People say Mastodon defy classification; and for good reason: They aren't afraid to try different things. Give this album a couple of honest listens. If you're into hard music, you'll likely find yourself hooked. This is an experience seperate from any other. This band doesn't always find it necessary to scream in Demonic dissonance or shred your ears off constantly with fretboard igniting metal. That makes for nice little respites from the grind (I've heard this referred to as Grind Metal). Maybe this could be called Bi-Metal. "Blood Mountain" is a masterpiece, period!

I agree, Avenged Sevenfold and H.I.M. are only metal if your knowledge of metal is limited to MTV. http://www.metal-archives.com/ is a great site if you're new to metal and you want to know what is and isn't considered metal by diehard fans of the genre. Try searching for either of those bands and you won't find a page for either of them.
