In spite of bad marketing, it was excellent!,
This review is from: John Carter (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray)
Like many before me, I almost passed on this movie due to the horrible trailers. But, being a Burroughs fan for over 50 years, I felt obligated to see the movie. I'm thrilled that I did...this is the best movie I've seen in fifty years, bar none.
At first, I questioned the casting and was not overly thrilled with the tattoos on Lynn Collins. But, she proved to be a mesmerizing Dejah Thoris and 'made' the film. Her character was well played and believable. Her smallish figure was ideal, considering the physiology and biology of the Martians (read the books).
I left the theater very happy. In fact, I convinced my wife to see it again with me on the following week-end. (I may try to see it again this week-end.) I will buy the video...in fact, I will probably upgrade to blu-ray, now that I have a video worthy of the expense of a new video player.
Anyone who rated this movie poorly, either was not watching, had an agenda, or does not like good, foundational, science fiction. Disney made a huge marketing blunder with what could well be the next big 'franchise'. The trailers should have had more Dejah Thoris, and a 'voice over' to lay the foundation of the history, culture, and ecology of the Burroughs' Mars.
My only wish was that they had a cameo of Thuvia in it, since they played the Therns so heavily.
Again, the best movie I've ever seen in fifty years and only the second I've ever paid to see in a theater more than once. See it while you can and buy the video.
