1.0 out of 5 stars Great electrical performance, but horrible material quality., January 1, 2014

This review is from: Seiko Men's SNE042 Stainless Steel Solar Watch (Watch)
I've had this for two months of light use. it keeps time perfectly, is light weight, does not bother you and can stay on all day,....except...within two months all the sheen/plating is coming off and exposing an ugly dark grey steel surface. It's not even from scratches, simply from running against my clothes and skin. Horrible horrible plating....and once a watch looks that ugly what good is it if it keeps time perfectly?

I have been watching this watch ever since my last Seiko bit the dust after many years. Too many to say exactly how many but more than 20. This watch looks exactly like my old watch except with a gray face and solar. After reading your review I am having many doubts about buying this watch as all your other reviews seem to be right on. I probably do not really need a watch anymore as like everyone else I carry cell phone that always has the right time. All that being said there is something to be said for just looking down at your wrist and seeing what time it is. I guess that is why all the cell phone makers are developing wrist based devises.

Hi Gary,

Same as you, I didn't really feel a need for the watch, except for when I am in meetings or out there in nature (where I normally turn my phone off or don't take it with me). I had a Seiko 5, which was great for about ten years - eventually it got scratched up bad - but the gold color never faded. This watch is technically probably superior, but the quality of materials is much much lower than the old Seiko watches (same as with every other mass produced product these days it seems). If you don't care about looks, go for it, it's practical, and light. If you want something that lasts and looks good, I guess you get what you pay for - keep an eye out for other products.
