Great receiver for the money,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Onkyo TX-NR509 5.1 Channel Network A/V Receiver (Discontinued by Manufacturer) (Electronics)
I have an older Onkyo receiver HTR640 which has been in use for ~8 years primarily to watch dvd's and listen to iPod. I bought this to power a new system in a condo we were remodeling. I bought wall mount speakers (Polk AudioPolk Audio RC85i 2-Way In-Wall Speakers (Pair, White) for the corners and Yamaha center channel speakerYamaha NS-IW760 6.5" 2-Way In-Wall Speaker System (White)), then hooked up the wiring using banana plugs. I plugged in an iPhone and played music from iTunes and it sounded pretty good. Then went through the audessy setup sequence and I was amazed at the difference. The room has a 20 foot vaulted ceiling and the back opens into a kitchen, so it is far from an ideal acoustic environment. The adjustments made by this receiver and the built-in software is a real treat. The base is a bit weak, but I can't justify a subwoofer in a townhouse setting if I want to keep my neighbors friendly, and I haven't cranked the sound up much for same reason. We played a standard dvd on a new blueray player (Vizio) and the cinema experience was superb. The center channel was flawless and thunder etc. from the surround system worked fine (Redford - Horse Whisperer). The remote is complicated, but actually runs all of our components (cable box, dvd, tv, usb/iPhone, tuner/receiver...) as advertised. Overall though I have lots to learn still, I think this is a very adequate receiver that will deliver a high-quality experience for anyone looking for a home cinema system. My flat screen is a post-Christmas clearance 55 inch Toshiba I bought for $900 locally. I presume if you want audiophile level sound, you would spend more on both the receiver/amp and speakers. All my audio components were purchased from Amazon and arrived on time and undamaged. For <$2K I have a great cinema system that has been through its first weekend shakedown with no problems and I'm a happy customer!
