Not for your average gamer, but there is a lot to appreciate.,
This review is from: Demon's Souls (Video Game)
I just rented Demon's Souls from Gamefly to check it out. Its a refreshingly unique experience in a sea of cookie cutter first person shooters and open world action games. Originally I had not planned to play this game but I just keep hearing about it more and more, especially now that Dark Souls (its spiritual sequel) has been released. I'm only about 6 hours in but totally in love with this Demon's Souls. The first 3-4 hours were frustrating but it has finally "clicked". Demon's Souls is more unforgiving than it is difficult. That is to say, it IS difficult, but it requires you to know what you're capable of and run from what you're not capable of handling. That aspect is difficult in itself because it's never really obvious what you can or can't handle. You're required to find out via trial and error, exploration and experimentation. Demon's Souls is also extremely rewarding and one of the most addictive titles I've played this generation. It's really hard to verbalize just why it's so great, you just have to experience it for yourself and have a little (or a lot?) of patience.
The kick-in-the-balls hard difficulty (admittedly, most of the time I will die because I'm impatient and not using sound strategies, but there have been PLENTY of cheap deaths) reminds me of the difficult games I played as a child on the NES and other early consoles. If you appreciate games that require trial and error, repetition, grinding, pattern recognition and, most of all, intense concentration and sound execution of strategy you will eat this game up. It's a very cerebral game but one that people will appreciate if they grew up playing mega man titles and grind-heavy RPGs. Demon's Souls harkens back to the days when video games didn't reward you and hold your hand every step of the way. It will not insult your intelligence. No offense, but the younger generation of gamers who never played consoles prior to the latest 2 console generations, and are playing military bro shooters excessively, accustomed to being constantly positively reinforced with rewards and upgrades need not apply - they will just not comprehend or appreciate a game like Demon's Souls. Older gamers should check it out and give it a try. You just might fall in love like I did.
I'm returning my borrowed copy from Gamefly tomorrow and will purchase my own personal copy.
