This review is from: Popular Crime: Reflections on the Celebration of Violence (Paperback)
I very much enjoyed this book. I'm not sure I understand the negative reviews, at no point does James claim to have created a "sabermetric" approach to crime. The closest he gets is by creating a self-admittedly arbitrary system of determining guilt by using a 100 point scale. And for people complaining that his opinions cloud the facts, some of the crimes he discusses are unsolved! Of course he has to use his opinion to explain what happened! This is a book about popular crimes of the past few hundred years, and how one man interprets them. You can't say the book doesn't deliver what it promises.
For people who are intrigued by mysteries, serial killers and the justice system, I highly recommend this book. James is a great, breezy writer who can explain situations and characters with the best of them. I really liked this.
