dull plot but the characters are interesting,
This review is from: The Marriage Plot: A Novel (Hardcover)
I chose this book after seeing all the glowing end of the year reviews last year. I apparently have a strong dislike of contemporary literary fiction that has non linear plots as this book does. In that respect, I liked this book better than some other contemporary fiction of this type only because I could identify a little with the main character and I felt something for each main character. The characters in general in this book are interesting but they don't DO anything interesting.
My other complaint is the insertion of discussion of not only literature but religion, biology. I don't have a problem is a work of fiction refers to various academic discourses, but I felt like this one was either trying to teach me a little something about everything, but not enough about any one subject to make me care. I don't mind being introduced to theories I don't know, but stick to one or two that are highly pertinent to the plot. Sometimes I felt the author was going into details on these subjects to show me he knows about them or to show off. I wasn't sure.
