3.0 out of 5 stars Beware the DVD transfer, March 26, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Jesus Christ Superstar (DVD)
I've been a big fan of JCS ever since the concept album came out. Over the years, I have come to appreciate Norman Jewison's interpretation, as well as his magnificent landscape shots, more and more. For me, this telling of the Jesus story is much more moving than Mel's Passion, thus my extreme disappointment after buying the DVD version when I discovered that a simple transfer of the film to DVD had been made. Unlike the restoration effort of many other transfers, in this case, there was no attempt to upgrade the sound when it was put into a 5.1 format. In other words, the film was literally copied straight onto the DVD version with all of the tape hiss, high frequency machine noise, and other assorted crackles. Perhaps Universal didn't feel the extra effort was warranted due to financial concerns, but in a film where the sound is crucial, this lack of attention detracts from the viewing experience. This being said, the DVD is still worth owning, particularly for an economical 15 bucks or less. Just beware of the sound quality.

I was curious about the sound quality on the DVD and this review helped. My recollection of the original is that the sound was quite "compressed" and I was hoping for some updating. As the review also notes, all things considered, still worth owning at the economy pricing.

The DVD was fine on a regular TV. There were no sound glitches. I enjoyed it just as much as I did the original in the movie theater.

Totally agree with the review, the sound quality is sub-par. What a waste of extraordinary singing!

I never thought the soundtrack was well recorded even on the vinyl records released with the movie. I had the original concept album which still holds up quite well and was quite dissapointed by the tinny sound and lack of depth and range in the movie soundtrack. If this movie ever gets released on Blu-Ray I hope the sound recording's shortcomings are addressed.

With the technology available today, it's criminal that nothing has been done to upgrade this superb film. I actually logged on to get a Blu-Ray copy of the movie, and was shocked to see that it didn't exist -- and that it hadn't even been remasteredan or upgraded !! I incourage everyone who loves this movie to start getting vocal about it. If we make enough noise, maybe Warner might rethink their prior lack of interest in doing anything to upgrade the fillm.

Gutierrez, a number of excellent films have been ignored. STATE OF SEIGE (ALSO 1973), for example, has yet to see the DVD light, but I attribute it more to ignorance than a conspiracy as you stupidly suggest for SUPERSTAR.

Are they all widescreen? As I recall JCS was a full screen and worked just fine on a 'regular' TV that some of us still use & enjoy!!
